A Light in the Dark is a heavily textured impasto painting of a vivid yellow rose emerging from a deep black background. Layers of yellow, orange, and red build the flower outward from a dense, shadowed center, allowing the physical ridges of paint to become part of the petals themselves. Small traces of green appear through the darkness, while the intense contrast makes the rose seem almost illuminated. The title comes from the lyric “A light in the dark” from Bullet for My Valentine’s Coma. For me, the phrase reflects the way the flower exists within the painting—something bright, alive, and resilient surrounded by darkness.
